Free agent tight end Luke Willson is visiting the Oakland Raiders, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Willson was a 2013 fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks. In his six years in the NFL, he has started 45 of 86 games. He has 102 receptions, 1,216 yards, and 11 touchdowns in his career.
Last season, he signed with the Detroit Lions on a one-year $2.5 million deal. He caught only 13 passes for 87 yards.
Though he hasn't been used often on offense, his ability to play tight end and on special teams makes him a good asset for any team.
The Raiders lost Jared Cook to the New Orleans Saints in free agency and are trying to find replacements for him.
They have other tight ends on the roster: Lee Smith, Darren Waller, Derek Carrier, Paul Butler. However, Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden are making a strong attempt to improve every position. Roster spots aren't safe.
Free-agent receiver additions by the Raiders include Antonio Brown, Tyrell Williams, and J.J. Nelson. They revamped Derek Carr's protection by signing Trent Brown from the New England Patriots. They bolstered their running back group with Isaiah Crowell.
Luke Willson, a 29-year-old tight end, likely won't be used heavily by any team that signs him. Yet, he brings valuable experience with him. He has ideal size for a tight end (6-5, 251 pounds). He has had playoff experience in his time with the Seahawks and can be effective when put in the right system.
Willson won't be a splash signing by any means; will his career turn for the better if he signs with the Raiders? He would be an under-the-radar signing that could pay dividends for them.
