The latest trend of football players sitting on the sidelines when the national anthem is played before games has given birth to two schools of thoughts: the pro and the against.
Oakland Raiders great and former wide receiver Tim Brown has made it clear which side he's on after offering his take on the contentious topic in an interview with TMZ Sports.
“Why bring negativity to this incredible, positive situation?”
Brown was specifically referring to Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch's decision to follow the lead of Colin Kaepernick prior to Oakland's preseason match against the Arizona Cardinals.
Brown, whose NFL career spanned 17 years (16 with Oakland), tried to drill harder his point by describing football as a safe haven for people trying to escape the negatives of the real world and thus should be free of such politically-charged actions.
“I understand these guys man, they're trying to make statements and they're trying to be a part of this world but football is where people go to get away from that stuff.”
The notion that athletes shouldn't be dipping their hands on political and societal issues has seemingly gone passe these days. It may not be the case during Brown's days, but his reaction to the issue is just reflective of the intangible divide between those who want athletes to stay silent and those who believe that sports figures have the moral and social responsibility to speak out.
