We still don't know whether Marshawn Lynch is going to play football next year, and we likely won't know for a while still. Oakland Raiders general manager Mike Mayock spoke to reporters at the owners meetings, and said he didn't have much of an update on talks.
Mayock said it will likely be a little longer, and that no decision will be made until after the NFL Draft, according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic.
“I think both parties are going to wait for the draft and go from there,” Mayock said.
Usually a team would want to know a player's decision before the draft, so this makes it sound like the hold up is on the Raiders' end. Perhaps if Oakland drafts a running back early next month, they won't want Lynch back. Lynch has indicated that the Raiders are the only team he'd like to continue playing for.
Lynch is 32 now, but he didn't look like it during his time with Jon Gruden last year. When he was on the field that is. Lynch's season was cut short by injuries last year, but he looked good before going down. He only played in six games, racking up 376 yards and three touchdowns.
The Raiders recently gave Jalen Richard a second-round restricted free agent tender, indicating they think quite highly of the young running back. It's possible the team wants to go younger at the position and get Richard more playing time. They also have plenty of draft picks, and could draft a runner early. Still, if Lynch is committed to playing and healthy, there's a very good chance he's back in Oakland next year.
