After starting the 2019 season 6-4 and being playoff contenders in the AFC, the Oakland Raiders, Jon Gruden, and Derek Carr have dropped four straight games — the most recent being a 20-16 heartbreaker against the Jacksonville Jaguars at home.

There is no single reason for the Raiders collapse at the end of this season but one possible answer could be a reported disconnect between Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr.

There is a significant disconnect between the coach and the quarterback. Gruden and Carr will play nice; they will say all the positives about one another. Still, having been around Gruden for many of those good years in Oakland, I know what he loves in quarterbacks: the toughness, the grit, the willingness to sacrifice, and a competitive drive to match his own,” said the Athletic's Michael Lombardi. “Carr makes too many mistakes with the ball, and whether it’s a fair assessment of his ability or not, he never displays the fire that would remind anyone of former quarterback Rich Gannon. Too many times he refuses to hold on for one more second, knowing he might get hit before releasing the ball.”

This season, Carr, a sixth-year pro out of Fresno State has completed 70 percent of his passes for 3372 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Gruden, has gone just 10-19 in his near-two years with the Raiders.

Gruden is currently on his second stint in Oakland after coaching the team from 1998 to 2001. The 56-year-old enjoyed better results in stint No. 1 going 38-26 in four years and winning two division titles.
