Raiders tight end Darren Waller broke through two horrendous tackling attempts by New York Jets defenders, on his way to a 38-yard touchdown reception.

Jets fans, avert your eyes. Raiders fans, savor this:

Not only was the score by Waller the second of the half for the fifth-year veteran, but was his eighth reception of the afternoon, to go along with 123 receiving yards. Having faced an early deficit throughout the first two quarters of the match, the breakaway by the tight end also served to give the Raiders their first lead of the day, heading into the break.

As for the Jets, the touchdown is particularly infuriating not only because of the porous effort displayed by the secondary, but because it capped a half of football in which the hapless franchise actually appeared to be capable of competitive football. Paced by a defensive unit that held the Raiders in check despite a plethora of turnovers by quarterback Sam Darnold, New York had hopes that they could enter halftime with a tie against the visiting west coast club.

Unfortunately for the Jets, that plan, like most this season, didn't quite play out as hoped against the Raiders.

Las Vegas will begin the second half with possession of the ball, looking to extend the Raiders' four-point lead.

The Raiders are coming off a terrible loss at the Atlanta Falcons. They will play most of their final games at home in Las Vegas, but have had this two-game Eastern time zone trip to deal with. Getting a split — while not an ideal outcome — would certainly keep them in the crowded AFC playoff picture. Getting swept on this trip would severely cripple their postseason aspirations.

The Raiders know how important this second half against the Jets is to their season. It will shape internal deliberations about the roster changes Las Vegas must make before the 2021 season.
