First-year Offensive Coordinator Steve Steichen will have another year calling plays in Los Angeles, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Steichen took over as the Chargers offensive coordinator in 2019 after previously serving as the team's quarterbacks coach since 2016. He took over from former coordinator Ken Whisenhunt who was fired midseason in October of 2019.

This season, the Chargers remained in the top half of the league in yards per game. However, 2019 saw the regression of longtime quarterback Phillip Rivers and as a result. Los Angeles fell to 21st in the league in points per game compared to sixth in 2018.

Since Steichen took over in week nine, the Chargers averaged 22.5 points per game and had a record of 2-6. Under Whisenhunt, Los Angeles averaged just 19.6 points per game and had a 3-5 record.

Starting the season without star running back Melvin Gordon also hindered the Chargers' offensive potential. As a whole, the entire team took a step back. After a promising 2018 season that saw the team win 12 games, the Chargers disappointed in 2019, missing the playoffs with a 5-11 record.

Whisenhunt had success in his time as OC but heading into 2020, Steichen will look to return the Chargers to be one of the best offenses in the league.

The team has excellent offensive building blocks such as Keenan Allen, Gordon, Austin Ekeler and Hunter Henry. however, the future of Rivers as the signal-caller in Los Angeles is in doubt and there are rumors that the Chargers may be targeting a quarterback in the 2020 draft.
