The Los Angeles Rams have quickly raced out to a 4-0 start to begin the 2018 season that has many touting them as being the best team in the league in position to contend for the Super Bowl. At the forefront of that has been the stellar play of Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff leading the charge to their high-octane offense.
During a recent Q&A with an AFC West scout, an NFC coach and an NFC West front-office official that was conducted by Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, Goff was chosen as the most surprising player in the league so far this season.
Most surprising player: Jared Goff. All three named Goff—and shockingly not Mahomes. Why? Mainly because they already felt Mahomes would be extremely good this year (though maybe not this good) but weren't as high on Goff entering this season.
What's changed? “The way he reads defenses is night-and-day from last year,” said the coach.
Goff had put together a strong 2017 campaign that saw him take some big strides forward in his development that saw him help lead the Rams to their first playoff appearance and a division title in well over a decade. However, the 23-year-old has taken another step forward through the early goings this season with his play on the field showing a tremendous amount of confidence in his ability while making highly accurate throws down the field.
All of that was put on display on Thursday night as he shredded the Minnesota Vikings talented defense to the tune of completing 26-of-33 passes for a career-high 465 yards, a career-best five touchdown passes, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Goff has been the linchpin to the Rams' offense that he has utilized the great amount of talent around him in running back Todd Gurley along with wide receivers Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods, and Cooper Kupp.
It has simply been another notable step up in his maturation as a quarterback that could see him possibly put the Rams in the position to compete for a Super Bowl and potentially beyond that.
