The biggest move for the Los Angeles Rams this past offseason may have been addition by subtraction. The NFC West franchise released longtime face of the franchise in All-Pro running back Todd Gurley.

In the three-time Pro Bowl rusher's absence, the Rams are “confident” that the new group of athletes in the backfield can carry the ground game burden.

Per Lindsey Thiry in ESPN.com Rams head coach had this to say about the situation:

“We feel we've got three really good backs … What does that mean in terms of the distribution of carries? I think that's to be determined based on how things play themselves out and when we get a chance to actually compete in practice and in those live opportunities.

“What we wanted to do was get a group that we felt really good about … This enables us to say, ‘We're not necessarily committed to any approach, it's a feel for the flow of the game.' But you'd like everybody to create a role for themselves, and we'll see what ends up happening then.

The Rams selected Florida State running back Cam Akers with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, a second-round selection, back in April. Additionally, L.A., coming off a season once removed from reaching the Super Bowl, has second-year rusher Darrell Henderson Jr. and veteran back Malcolm Brown on the depth chart.

Quarterback Jared Goff commented on Henderson, saying,

“Darrell is a special talent, a special player, and he can be dangerous … I think he's fast, he's athletic, he can catch extremely well, he's got the ability to be, I think, as time goes on, a top guy. We're going to have to wait and see, but he's got everything you want. He's smart, he's fast. He's agile. He can do everything.”

Meanwhile, McVay provided additional praise of Henderson,

“Henderson had some instances where you see the flashes of why we liked him so much coming out of Memphis last year .Really excited about the opportunity he's going to have to earn some more carries and touches.”

Henderson and Brown combined to rush for 402 yards during the 2019 campaign, with the latter scoring five touchdowns. Akers, in his junior season with the Seminoles, rushed for 1,144 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns on the ground.

It will certainly be an adjustment after moving on from Gurley, as McVay and the Rams appear to be heading towards a pass-first offense with Goff under center.
