The Rams have long had their eyes fixated on getting a new deal in place with Gurley that had recently ramped up after the Pittsburgh Steelers failed to secure a long-term extension with Pro Bowl running back Le'Veon Bell prior to the deadline last week for players on the franchise tag for the 2018 campaign.
Article Continues BelowLos Angeles did have the luxury of the 23-year-old being under the fifth-year option for the 2019 season, which they picked up earlier this offseason, but the team was able to get ahead of any possible issues flaring up in contract talks.
The team has now secured one of the game's best running backs through the 2023 season in the prime years of his career that should continue to see him produce at an elite level. The move could work out greatly on both sides over the course of the contract while leaving open the door for him to work out another lucrative deal in his career. Los Angeles has now locked in two of their primary offensive weapons in Gurley and star wide receiver Brandin Cooks to long-term deals.
It has now positioned the Rams even better for the long haul with their centerpiece on offense now in the fold for the next several years. With Gurley now under a new deal, the focus on foreseeably shifts over to getting their star defensive tackle Aaron Donald agreed to a lucrative extension that will keep him in place well beyond 2018.
