There were rumors about Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay possibly walking away after winning this Super Bowl this year to be a television analyst. That didn't happen, and McVay is in line to get a massive contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.

But given those retirement rumblings, just how long will the 36-year-old McVay coach? If he wanted to, the Rams coach could probably challenge for the NFL record for coaching wins, which is held by Don Shula (328). Bill Belichick has a good chance of overtaking Shula assuming he plans to stick around for a while, as he has racked up 290 wins so far.

McVay says chasing after those guys is not really a goal of his, per Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times:

“If you said, ‘Do I have a desire to try to chase like Belichick or Don Shula in wins?’ — I really don’t.”

This doesn't necessarily mean McVay will be leaving the Rams in the near future, but given this and the retirement rumors, he doesn't sound like a guy who's going to be an NFL lifer. However, he did say he wants to be in the Hall of Fame:

“Hell yeah,” McVay said, adding, “But if you said, ‘Who is the best of all time, or the most successful of all time in terms of longevity … that hasn’t ever been something that really has been appealing to me.”

McVay was hired by the Rams when he was just 30 years old in 2017 and is 55-26 in the regular season. Los Angeles has made the Super Bowl twice in his tenure. McVay certainly has the chance to be one of the all-time great coaches, but we'll see just how long he actually sticks with the gig.
