Throughout his career, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff has dealt with the label “system quarterback”. Critics, professional and armchair alike, accuse him of relying too heavily on coach Sean McVay's offensive scheme.

McVay came to the defense of his signal-caller during an interview with ESPN's Lindsey Thiry.

“He makes the system what it is. We are able to do the things we are because we have the right trigger man that can really do anything that we ask in terms of changing the launch point, what types of concepts we want to activate, whether it be play action, the drop-back game, quick, intermediate, or down the field.” McVay said.

The label of system quarterback is a controversial one. Many will call just about any player a system quarterback, including greats like Tom Brady and Matt Ryan. Using that label simply implies that a signal-caller plays to his strengths. You would never want Brady to run Lamar Jackson's offense. If the expectation around quarterbacks is that they succeed no matter what plays are called or what scheme is run, than every single quarterback in the NFL is system-reliant.

Goff is coming off a terrific year, one in which he led the Rams to an NFC Championship. No matter what he does, the system quarterback label will be tough to get rid of, but a Super Bowl title would sure help.

The Rams face off against their NFC Championship foe the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.
