The Miami Dolphins will interview special teams coach Darren Rizzi for their head-coaching job on Friday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Rizzi earned the position of the Dolphins' special teams coach back in 2010, also serving as the team's assistant head coach during that span.
Prior to making the jump to the NFL, Rizzi worked various jobs on the college circuit from 1993 up until 2008, serving brief stints as head coach of the University of New Haven (1999-01) and Rhode Island (2008).
Overall, Rizzi went 18-23 as a head coach between the two schools, most recently going 3-9 during his lone season at Rhode Island. He also worked for Colgate, Northeastern and Rutgers, serving as the Scarlet Knights' special teams coach from 2002 through 2007.
Article Continues BelowThe Dolphins are coming off of a season in which they went just 7-9, resulting in the firing of head coach Adam Gase after three years with the club. Gase took over at the helm for Miami in 2016, leading the team to 10 wins and a playoff appearance in his first season. However, he won just six games in 2017 before missing the postseason yet again this past season.
The Dolphins actually got off to a good start this year, too, winning their first three games before proceeding to lose four of their next five to fall to 4-4. They remained in playoff contention through Week 13, courtesy of a crazy last-second win over the New England Patriots, but they were then routed by the Minnesota Vikings the following week and ended up losing three straight to end the season.
