The Miami Dolphins have rebooted their rebuilding process over the offseason and are expected to not be overly competitive this season. However, they have tied an important lineman, Jesse Davis, to a multi-year deal.
Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams revealed that the team signed the undrafted offensive guard out of Idaho to a deal that will last until 2022. The amount he will get over the next three years is reported to be around the $15-million mark with $8.5 million of it guaranteed.
Davis also reportedly signed an exclusive rights tender worth $645,000 during the offseason.
The Dolphins played Davis as the right guard for all of the team's 920 offensive snaps in the 2018 season. Brian Flores has a lot of flexibility with Davis, who can play on the right, center, and the left of the offensive line.
It's most likely that he will play on the left as the replacement for important left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was traded to the Houston Texans in the final days of the preseason.
Pundits believe that the trade Miami pulled off was a great one for the team, as recounted by the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson when he collated Jimmy Johnson's views on the trade:
“Houston probably overpaid for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, but not by much. I’ll vehemently disagree with those who say Houston got robbed. Houston gave up two first-round picks and a second, plus two marginal players, and got Tunsil, a 25-year-old quality long-term left tackle, durable receiver Kenny Stills (missed two of 99 career games with injuries) and fourth and sixth-round picks. Say the Texans give the 20th pick in 2020 and the 20th and 52nd picks in 2021. A long-term left tackle is certainly worth two mid-round ones.”
Davis may not be a tackle as great as Tunsil, but he will be a great piece for the Dolphins as they continue their rebuild.
