The fans of the struggling Miami Dolphins franchise saw a light at the end of the tunnel when the team selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, it will take them longer than expected to see their prized recruit take the field as the team's starting quarterback.
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores sounded off on Tagovailoa potentially taking over QB1 Ryan Fitzpatrick's spot:
“As far as him being a starter, we just don’t feel like he’s ready yet,” he said, via Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post.
Flores recently announced that the 16-year veteran will continue to take control of the reins in their upcoming Week 5 matchup against the depleted San Francisco 49ers.
Fitzpatrick has previously started in each of their first four games of the season. He had his fair share of struggles under center but his veteran experience and leadership still puts him ahead of Tagovailoa today.
The Dolphins suffered a 21-11 opening game loss to division rival New England Patriots in Week 1 action followed by a 31-28 nail-biting encounter against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.
The Miami-based squad vented its ire on the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars and won on a 31-13 outcome but came crashing back to earth with a 31-23 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4 proceedings.
A condensed training camp and the lack of preseason preparations limited the rookie gunslinger to strut his wares in front of team decision-makers. Hopefully, he makes significant progress throughout the season as he aims to finally take on the field as a full-fledged Miami Dolphin.
