The future of Jarvis Landry is arguably the biggest storyline for the Miami Dolphins this offseason. The star wideout wants to get paid, but it remains to be seen whether the Dolphins will be willing to give him the big-money deal he’s looking for.
And as Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports, Landry also does not seem hopeful that such a deal will be done and that his time in Miami may be over.
Landry, who told reporters after the Dolphins’ regular-season finale that he was not sure if would return to the Dolphins in 2018, is suggesting to friends that it is more likely that he has played his final game for Miami.
Landry has told associates that he is not optimistic that the long-term deal with the Dolphins he so desperately wants will be reached.
One source familiar with the situation told the Miami Herald there is a bit of resignation in Landry’s circle that he will be playing for another team in 2018.
Landry was drafted in the second round by the Dolphins in 2014 and has been one of the team’s most productive players since. He fell short of a third-straight 1,000-yard season in 2017 as he finished with 987, but still set new career-highs with 112 catches and nine touchdowns.
But despite his stellar production, the Dolphins still have reservations about giving the three-time Pro Bowler his desired contract, which his reportedly similar to the four-year, $58 million deal (with $30 million guaranteed) the Packers gave their star receiver Davante Adams. That’s due to Landry’s apparent shortcomings in terms of leadership and controlling his emotions, among other issues.
The Dolphins have already entertained trading Landry away, so they’re not completely averse to letting him leave. And if the reports coming out of Landry’s inner circle are to be believed, it seems he may finally be starting to sense that it might be the end of the line for their relationship.
