Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots received some stinging criticism recently from former player Cassius Marsh. The defensive end, who spent part of last season with New England, absolutely ripped the team’s culture, saying he hated playing there because it was just not a fun environment.

When Belichick was asked about whether it’s important for him to get his players to feel some enjoyment while they work, his response was pretty much what was expected.

“We feel what’s important to us is to win,” Belichick said per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “So that’s really what we’re trying to do.”

It seems clear from Belichick’s whole career that winning is indeed what is important to him. He’s done a lot of winning pretty consistently for close to two decades now, which is quite a feat. Obviously, there have to be sacrifices that have to be made in order to be that successful for so long. One of those sacrifices is likely the fact that the team must be strict and regimented with how they operate, which is probably not a very pleasurable feeling for some people.

Players are human, after all, and there may be a tipping point to just how much of that sort of environment they can take. But that’s the way Belichick has chosen to run his team, and he doesn’t appear ready to change anytime soon. That means it’ll be on the players to adjust to his way or make arrangements to find a way out of that situation, which has delivered so much success over the years.
