The New England Patriots have spent the offseason making moves to improve their roster in hopes of bouncing back last season’s disappointing campaign. However, it looks like adding San Francisco 49ers quarterback and former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be one of their targets.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Schulz, the Patriots will not be pursuing Garoppolo because of the team’s cap space situation, as well as the impending return of starting quarterback Cam Newton. Additionally, the class of 2021 also includes several talented quarterback prospects, one of whom could fall to New England, which owns the 15th overall pick in the draft.
#Patriots are not pursuing #49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, per sources. Cap space isn’t there and obviously Cam Newton will return. Additionally, the draft is flush with QBs. No Jimmy GQ reunion for the Pats in foreseeable future.

Earlier this month, the Patriots brought back Newton on a one-year, $14 million deal, ensuring that the 2015 NFL MVP would start for at least one more season.
There have been rumors that the Patriots are interested in a reunion with the 29-year-old Garoppolo, whom they selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Garoppolo went on to play for three seasons in New England as backup to Tom Brady, winning two Super Bowls with the team before being traded to the 49ers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, however, reported that the Niners will not be trading the former Eastern Illinois product.

Whatever Garoppolo’s future with the 49ers may be, it appears unlikely that it would include a move back to Foxborough and a reunion with Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
