The future of tight end Rob Gronkowski with the New England Patriots was suddenly under serious doubt as the Internet quickly exploded with rumors that Gronk would get traded by the end of Friday.

However, Tom E. Curran and Mike Giardi of NBC Sports Boston have both shot down that rumor on Twitter:

This rumor comes on the heels of Julian Edelman’s PEDs suspension somehow getting posted on Reddit a day before mainstream media, which likely helped the Gronk trade rumor gain a lot more traction that it probably deserved.

Gronkowski has been arguably the most impactful tight end in the NFL since entering the league in 2010. He’s coming off another brilliant season in 2017 where he had 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns to earn his fourth First-Team All-Pro selection.

But despite Gronkowski’s excellent production, the possibility of him suddenly getting traded isn’t completely far-fetched. After all the drama that’s happened between him and the team this offseason, with his contemplation of retirement and the apparent friction between him and Bill Belichick, it wouldn’t be that hard to see a scenario where the Patriots decided to finally move on from their All-Pro tight end.

That doesn’t seem to be the case, though. Not on Friday, June 8th, at least. The Patriots are still working on restructuring his contract, which could be done soon. There’s still a chance the Patriots do decide to deal one of their best players, but it likely won’t be today, regardless of what the rumor says.
