The New England Patriots' backfield has been hit with the injury bug this offseason. Fortunately, it appears they have more clarity on the situation surrounding running backs Rex Burkhead and Sony Michel once the 2018 NFL season rolls around.
Both players have been trying to work their way back from knee injuries. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Burkhead seems more likely to be ready for the regular season than Michel does.
The news is somewhat bittersweet for fans in New England. It is encouraging to see that Burkhead is poised to make his return. The Patriots have indicated that he will take on an integral role in the offense this year. His versatile skill set will allow the coaching staff to plug him in wherever they please.
Unfortunately, there still seems to be concern about Michel's status for the 2018 campaign. The Patriots invested the 31st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft on him with the hope that he could potentially make an immediate impact. However, the rookie's lingering knee injury will force them to take a more cautious approach with his workload.
New England will likely rely on veteran running backs Jeremy Hill and Mike Gillislee in the preseason finale versus the New York Giants. They will have one more chance to etch out a role for themselves alongside Burkhead before the regular season starts.
