Many players around the NFL are being forced to wear new headgear heading into 2019, as all of the helmets that players have worn for the last 10 years are no longer certified by the NOCSAE.

While Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown threatened to step away from the game and filed a grievance with the league over the issue, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees does not seem to mind as much:

“Worry about things you can control,” Brees said when asked about the helmet change, according to Amie Just of The New Orleans Advocate. “I didn’t really control that one, right? They were outlawing it. They scan your head and they do all this fancy stuff. And I figure if it’s if it’s going to help protect me a little bit more then that’s probably a good thing.”

Brees considered changing helmets four years ago, but when then-teammate Lance Moore mocked him over the size of the helmet, he decided to stick with what he had:

“He’s like, ‘Bro, I cannot take you seriously wearing that helmet. I just can’t. I can’t even process the play you just said. I can’t look at you the same,'” Brees said. “So I was like, ‘Agh, forget the stupid helmet. You know, go back to my old school one.’ Rocked it for four more years.”

The helmet served Brees well, as he made three straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2016 and 2018 and was an MVP candidate this past season after throwing for 3,992 yards, 32 touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing a record 74.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 115.7. He also led the Saints to a 13-win campaign.
