New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has not played since Week 2 due to a thumb injury, but he is pushing to return for his team's Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, saying “that's the plan,” according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.
Brees said that he needs to ensure he is ready to come back and will monitor himself throughout the week but added that if he says he is able to play, head coach Sean Payton will trust him.
The veteran threw on Wednesday and said he has felt good so far.
Brees exited after just five passes during his team's Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In Week 1, he completed 32 of his 43 throws for 370 yards, a couple of touchdowns, and an interception in a win over the Houston Texans.

During that time, he has made 11 Pro Bowl appearances, most recently earning a trip last season when he threw for 3,992 yards, 32 touchdowns, and five picks while completing 74.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 115.7, finishing second in MVP voting as a result.
New Orleans has actually not skipped a beat in Brees' absence, as the Saints have gone 5-0 under the direction of Teddy Bridgewater. The Saints thumped the Chicago Bears by a score of 36-25 last Sunday, with Bridgewater going 23-for-38 with 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Saints are 6-1 and are looking to stop a Cardinals team that has won three games in a row.
