Although the 2020 NFL season may be in full swing, the league has suffered a number of setbacks due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has ensured that this will not be the case at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome after denying the Saints’ request to have fans return in a limited capacity for the foreseeable future.
Cantrell took to Twitter to address the decision and all the health concerns involved:
While the Saints' request for a special exception to the city’s Covid-19 guidelines remains under consideration, allowing 20K people in an indoor space presents significant public health concerns. More ⤵️

Cantrell has yet to give a timetable of when a return to the Superdome would be possible. As a result, the decision has been met with some criticism given the alternative options on the table for the team.
Reports have already indicated that Saints are meeting with officials to have their home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Of course, it remains to be seen just at what point in the 2020 NFL season they will be able to make such a relocation come to fruition.
The NFL's inability to enforce its own protocols have forced them to reschedule several games already to start the season, including the Tuesday matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans. They have now decided to step up their safety protocols by testing for COVID-19 on game days starting this week.
Article Continues BelowWhile the looming situation with fan attendance will remain a storyline in New Orleans, it is safe to say that the Saints are more concerned with getting back on track to compete beyond the regular season. They will need to start by rectifying the situation with wide receiver Michael Thomas.
