Buck Allen has found a new home. The running back is signing with the New Orleans Saints, per Field Yates of ESPN.com. Terms of the deal weren't immediately disclosed, although it's probably safe to assume that it's a cheap, short-term deal.
The Saints dropped running back A.J. Ouellette from the 90-man roster to make room for Allen. Allen was originally taken by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, and spent the first four years of his career in Baltimore.
He didn't have a very active market, and teams weren't exactly banging down his door to sign him this offseason. Allen worked out for the Saints last week alongside a couple of other veteran backs, and they apparently liked what they saw. He will have effectively swapped places with Mark Ingram, who left New Orleans to sign with the Ravens earlier this offseason.
Article Continues BelowAllen has had some good moments in the league as a receiver, but he has never been too efficient as a runner. He was the lead back in Baltimore for a time during the 2017 season, where he ended up carrying the ball 153 times for 591 yards and four touchdowns. The USC product had 110 yards and three touchdowns on the ground last year, with another 196 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
The Saints have Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray firmly planted atop the depth chart, so if Allen makes the team he'll be purely depth. The Saints also recently added ex-Browns running back Matthew Dayes, so there should be an all-out competition for the last spot at running back.
