The New Orleans Saints dipped their toes in the water on Friday morning, working out the polarizing wide receiver Antonio Brown. However, despite his supreme talent, Nola neglected to sign Brown after working out six receivers in total.
After conducting the workout, Saints coach Sean Payton said his team was doing “due diligence” on the receiver. He said New Orleans would need to get clarity from the NFL on if Brown would be eligible to play in the postseason if they signed him, per Mike Triplett of ESPN.
In the Friday press conference, a reporter noted that Payton said the Saints weren't interested in Brown earlier in the season. However, he said that he “probably wasn’t telling you the truth a few months ago.”
Article Continues BelowThe NFL is currently investigating Brown under its personal conduct policy filed by his former trainer, Britney Taylor. She alleged that Brown, in multiple instances, sexually assaulted her. He was also accused of sexual assault by an artist who worked for him in his house in 2017.
The league did not place Brown on their commissioner's exempt list while he was a free agent. However, they hinted at doing so if a club signed him. The Saints would need clarity on the matter if they were to sign him, as there is a very real possibility that he would not be eligible to play if he put pen to paper.
The Saints are looking for a No. 2 receiver alongside Michael Thomas. Brown, on paper, would undoubtedly be an ideal No. 2,. Before his demise, the 31-year-old was a four-time first-team All-Pro and led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 2018 (15).
