Drew Brees announced that he is returning to the New Orleans Saints in 2020. But he isn't the only quarterback on the roster that needs to sign a new contract. With just a month until free agency, Sean Payton claims that the contract for Taysom Hill is going to take “more work” than Brees' next deal.

Per Amie Just in the Times-Picayune:

“If he was unsigned prior to the league year, I would anticipate us really paying close attention to that and looking at that first-round tender,” Payton said. “That’ll take some time, relative to his contract because it’s unique in what he’s doing now and what we feel like he can be and what he can do when Drew does retire. That will probably take a little more work than the contract that [GM] Mickey [Loomis] does with Drew.”

Ahead of free agency, the Saints are extremely confident that they'll have a deal in place for Brees. On the other hand, the same confidence isn't being exuded with Hill's contract talks.

With Brees returning, it's almost inevitable that Teddy Bridgewater is headed elsewhere in free agency. The last thing the Saints want though is to lose two of their quarterbacks this offseason.

While Hill is a restricted free agent, New Orleans is uncertain of what other teams are willing to offer him. Provided that, the Saints may be inclined to place a first- or second-round tender on Hill.

By placing a first-round tender on Hill, the Saints would have to pay him nearly $5 million next season. At the same time, a team could offer him more than that and force New Orleans to match. The Saints realize they are headed toward an interesting situation with Hill in free agency.
