New York Giants starting tight end Evan Engram was forced to leave Friday’s preseason game against the Jets with a concussion, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
Engram suffered the head injury with 5:21 left in the second quarter when he was sandwiched by Jets linebackers Darron Lee and Avery Williamson after a reception. The ball came loose at the end of the play and was ruled a fumble on the field, but the call was overturned after a video review.
Giants coach Pat Shurmur had no further update on his starting tight end’s condition after the game, which the Giants won, 22-16.
Engram, who had three catches for 23 yards against the Jets prior to his departure, is expected to play a pivotal role in the Giants offense this season. He’s coming off a strong rookie season last year as he had a team-high 64 catches for 722 yards and seven touchdowns.
Engram's concussion is a big blow to the Giants, who are still without Odell Beckham Jr. as well as rookie Saquon Barkley, who is still nursing a hamstring injury. Engram will now have 16 days to clear the concussion protocol in order to make it back in time for the Giants’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 9.
If Engram is unable to make it back in time, the Giants will be expecting the likes of Rhett Ellison and Jerell Adams to step up at tight end.
