There has been plenty of speculation regarding the state of the New York Giants quarterback situation. It seems tight end Evan Engram still has the utmost confidence in quarterback Eli Manning.
Manning has received his fair share of flak for his underwhelming performance last season. Engram said he is still optimistic that he is more than capable of playing at a high level during an appearance on the NFL Network:
“Eli is still going to be Eli,” Engram said. “We need to be better as a team sometimes and play more complementary football. When he’s protected and we have a great gameplan in, he can still make every throw and can still drive the ball down the field. He’s shown that and he showed that the second half of [last] season. We started competing more often and making more big plays and scoring a lot more points.”
It is encouraging to see that Manning still has the confidence of his teammates. There is no question that he has endured some rough stretches as of late which resulted in many calling for a change under center. However, Engram's comments indicate that the team is not blaming him for the state of their offense last season.
Engram has established himself as an integral part of the Giants' passing attack in recent years. His production diminished alongside the rest of the offense after finishing the 2018 campaign with 45 receptions for 577 yards and three touchdowns. Of course, the departure of wide receiver Odell Beclkham Jr. will open things up for him to take on an increased role moving forward.
