The New York Jets have activated safety Marcus Maye from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, per the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.
Mehta also reports that Maye, entering his third season in the NFL, will have “plenty of time to get back in sync” for Week 1, when the Jets take on the Buffalo Bills in their regular-season debut.
Maye, 26, was a standout at the University of Florida, where the defensive back recorded five interceptions, six forced fumbles, and combined for 121 tackles in four seasons with the Gators.
Maye declared for the 2017 NFL Draft, and he was selected in the second round by the Jets after the New York/New Jersey franchise took LSU's safety Jamal Adams one round before.
Despite having loads of talent, Maye's professional football career has been mostly derailed by injuries. He only appeared in six games during the 2018 season for the Jets after a rookie season where he made two interceptions, forced one fumble, and made 78 combined tackles.
The Jets have anticipated Maye and Adams would make up the foundational pieces in the defense's secondary. However, with Maye out, and other issues at cornerback, New York's DB's might be the team's weakest spot at the moment.
The good news, however, is Maye's return to practice from the PUP, where he was inactive due to a shoulder injury. Before that, he suffered a broken thumb earlier in the season.
The Jets face the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia Eagles to round out the rest of their preseason slate of matchups, giving Maye plenty of time to get well-adjusted with his teammates and back from injury.
