After signing former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Corey Davis to a three-year deal at the start of free agency, the Jets may not be finished adding more playmakers. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the Jets have been having dialogue with wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The question is whether or not the Jets want to spend more money on another wide receiver. Sam Darnold, despite struggles of his own play on the field, hasn't had much of anything to work with as far as weapons go since he was drafted by the Jets back in 2018.
New York has an interesting decision to make this offseason. Do they run it back with Darnold, surround him with as much talent as possible and then draw a conclusion on him? Or do they trade him and select a quarterback like Zach Wilson or Justin Fields with the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft? It's big decision that could have a domino effect on the Jets' outlook for years to come.
Regardless of what they do at quarterback, this team needs more weapons. While Corey Davis is a solid addition, ideally he isn't your No. 1 wide receiver. JuJu Smith-Schuster could fit that role for the Jets, but the price could be steep.
A former second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the University of Southern California, Smith-Schuster has blossomed into a terrific receiver. In 2020, he had 97 catches for 831 yards and nine touchdowns.
There have been some questions about maturity, which is playing into the calculus, but the risk could be worth the reward:
When I checked in with team source on JuJu couple days ago, was told (TikTok & headlines): "All that matters ⌠Skills are first ⌠Balancing act"
Balancing = money. After first wave of signings, this is all about being "opportunistic" for JD, as reported.
This = opportunity https://t.co/1cT5E349Eb

Adding Corey Davis won't be enough. The Jets also need a solidified running back. Whether they go the route of attacking these needs in free agency with guys like Smith-Schuster or bank in on the draft is yet to be determined. A blend of both is a likely possibility as well. Adding JuJu Smith-Schuster or any talent is a necessity for the Jets to give Darnold or another quarterback the best chance to succeed.
