Mississippi State defensive lineman Montez Sweat is considered one of the best pass-rushing prospects in this year's NFL Draft class. However, a heart condition has made some teams bearish on Sweat, which has caused his stock to drop.
Now, Sweat, who had initially planned to attend the draft next week, will be staying home for it.
“My devoted grandparents and a host of other family members helped me to get to this point in my life and I wanted to celebrate this special day with my family so we all chose to do so where it all started for me, Stone Mountain, Georgia,” Sweat told ESPN.
It's entirely possible that Sweat does simply want to spend that special day with his family, but the timing of Sweat's decision is a bit peculiar, as it comes right after a report that teams were taking him off of their draft boards.
Article Continues BelowSweat was diagnosed with an enlarged heart at the Scouting Combine, and while doctors say that he can play with the condition, some NFL teams are naturally uncomfortable with the idea of having a kid with a heart issue on their team.
There is no denying Sweat's talent.
He is coming off of a spectacular senior campaign in which he racked up 53 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and a forced fumble. Not only that, but he posted an incredible time of 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash, the fastest time ever for a defensive lineman.
However, due to his health problems, he may fall a lot further than he originally expected.
