The NFL has had an odd rule in the past. If teams finished with the same exact record and strength of schedule, their draft order would be determined by a literal coin flip. That's no longer the case though, according to Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.

To be clear, the coin flip isn't completely gone. There's still a chance the draft order could be determined by a flip of a coin. However, the chances of that happening are now slim – very very slim.

In order to give the coin flip the lowest chance of happening, there are now more roadblocks in the way.

Strength of schedule is still the ultimate tie-breaker if teams have similar schedules. Now if those are the same though, more tie-breakers are in place.

Head-to-Head record, record in common games, strength of victory, combined ranking in points scored and points allowed, net points in all games and net touchdowns in all games.

If after all of that, the teams are still completely tied – a coin flip will determine the draft order.

However, let's be serious for a moment – that will never happen. The likelihood of two teams tying in all of those categories is basically impossible. The first extra tie-breaker already makes that extremely difficult (head-to-head) because the only way the two teams could tie in that category would be if the didn't play or if they were in the same division.

Then they'd need to have the same record in games against common opponents and then win by the same amount of points.

After that, they'd need to somehow tie when it comes to combining their scored points and points allowed. This could happen because teams could be equally bad or good at one or both, or really good at one but bad at the other – resulting in a tie. Again though, very unlikely.

Finally, the last two are net points in all games and net touchdowns in all games. So basically they'd need to have the same scores for the entire season.

Technically, the NFL didn't completely get rid of the coin flip to determine the NFL Draft order.

However, the possibility of it happening has drastically decreased to almost zero – effectively dropping the flipping of a coin.
