A debate that has been raging on for years has come to the forefront again. Amid all of the protests and activism following George Floyd's death, the call to change the name of the Washington Redskins has been raised once more.
In an editorial by the Washington Post, the editorial board once again called out owner Dan Snyder and implored him to change the name away from the racially insensitive moniker the team uses.
“This should be an easy call. Mr. Snyder — or, if Mr. Snyder refuses to back down from his declaration of “NEVER,” the NFL — should take advantage of this singular moment in history to get on the right side of history,” the Post wrote. “Change the name. NOW.”
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has also called on the Redskins franchise to change the name.
Article Continues Below“I think it’s past time for the team to deal with what offends so many people,” Bowser told the Team 980 radio station about the Redskins moniker. “This is a great franchise with a great history that’s beloved in Washington, and it deserves a name that reflects the affection that we’ve built for the team.”
Uncertainty still reigns over what the team name would be if the Redskins moniker does get changed, and it will be a fight to have it happen.
In the current climate, however, the time is definitely perfect to get it changed. Snyder has remained firm on his refusal to change the name, but this moment and the activism it has created within the NFL might be the catalyst needed for Commissioner Roger Goodell to step in.
Many fans around the NFL already refused to call the franchise by their current team name, referring to them as simply Washington or other nicknames — like the “Redacteds”
