Could there be a reverse Brett Favre? There could very well be, as the Green Bay Packers are interested in acquiring long-time Minnesota Viking and current free agent defensive end Everson Griffen. According to Ian Rapoport, the interest is mutual.
This is interesting: As long-time #Vikings DE and current free agent Everson Griffen narrows down his choices, the rival #Packers are among the teams to express interest. That interest is mutual. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer had recently said he wants Griffen back as well.
As reported, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer still wants the 11th-year lineman back in Minnesota, so it looks like there will be a bidding war between the two NFC North rivals. Who wins is anyone's guess at this point. Griffen has played all of his previous 10 years in the NFL with the Vikings, so a change of scenery would be the first in his NFL tenure. Last season Griffen recorded 26 solo tackles, 11 of those for a loss, including eight sacks in 15 games played.
Article Continues BelowWhile not as important of a position in a 3-4 defense as it is in a 4-3 defense, Green Bay would definitely like adding Griffen's production to the team. Griffen helped lead the Viking to the fifth-most sacks in the NFL last season, recording the second-most on the team behind only Danielle Hunter. The Packers, on the other hand, were 15th in the league. The addition of Griffen would help free up even more space for linebackers Za'Darius and Preston Smith, who led the team in sacks last season.
Players have gone between the two rivals multiple times throughout the teams' long histories, but all but one player (Gilbert Brown) went from the Packers to Vikings. The most notable player to go between the two franchises was Brett Favre who, following a Hall of Fame career in Green Bay, went to Minnesota following a stint in New York with the Jets. Other notable players who went from Green Bay to Minnesota include Greg Jennings and Darren Sharper.
