Former Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Flores has been named as a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2021, the Hall of Fame announced.

Flores, the NFL's first Hispanic head coach and first to win Super Bowl, was nominated as a Coach Finalist by the Hall of Fame’s Coach Committee, which met on Tuesday.

In his distinguished coaching career with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders (1979-87) and Seattle Seahawks (1992-94), he compiled a 97-87 record and led the Raiders to wins in Super Bowl XV (1980 season) and XVIII (1983 season). Unofficially, he's known to be the only head coach to lead the same franchise to Super Bowl crowns in two different cities, as the team relocated to L.A. in 1982.

His Raiders won 91 games against 56 losses (.619), and he ranks no. 2 behind John Madden in coaching wins in franchise history. In 1983, he was named the AFC Coach of the Year.

Flores joined Mike Ditka as the only people in NFL history to win a Super Bowl as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

Notably, Flores was also the first Hispanic starting quarterback in the history of the league. In 10 seasons, he threw 93 touchdowns and 92 interceptions across 68 starts for the Raiders (1960-66), Buffalo Bills (1967-69), and the Kansas City Chiefs (1969).

According to the Hall of Fame, “The Coach Committee is comprised of nine members of the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee who consider coaches whose careers ended at least five years ago.” On Tuesday, the committee decided between six nominees for 2021 induction, ultimately deciding on Flores, whose induction seems long overdue.

The Class of 2021 will be enshrined on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021.
