The Washington Redskins are coming off a second straight season missing the playoffs falling well short, which has put more pressure on head coach Jay Gruden to lead the team to success in 2018.

This is something that Gruden has acknowledged as he stated that his long-term future in Washington will be dictated with by his ability to push the franchise to success back into the postseason, according to John Keim of ESPN.

“We do need to produce, without a doubt,” Gruden said. “It’s a production-based business, without a doubt. Every NFL head coach knows that’s the deal, whether you’re in your first year, fifth year, 10th year or in the Hall of Fame. You’ve got to win.”

Gruden is heading into his fifth season coaching the Redskins as he has struggled to have much success with the franchise as he has made the playoffs just once over that span with the NFC East division title in the 2015 season that saw them fall in the Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers. Aside from that, he has been unable to secure more than nine wins in any campaign while falling under a .500 record twice.

The Redskins have made some major moves this offseason that began with the addition of Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to effectively replace Kirk Cousins next season. Smith is coming off a career-best campaign and will be entering a situation where he will have the helm of the offense in hopes that he can lead the Redskins to similar success that he experienced with the Kansas Chiefs where he went to the playoffs in four out of the last five seasons with back-to-back AFC West division titles.

Beyond that, the pressure is on Gruden to guide the Redskins to break through in the NFC East to ensure a stable future ahead with the franchise.
