The Washington Redskins made headlines after their blockbuster trade for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith quarterback. As a result, quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to become the biggest free agent on the market this offseason.

However, it seems Washington may have other plans for Cousins. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Redskins may actually try to get something in return for the future franchise quarterback rather than just letting him walk for nothing:

“As one source with knowledge of the manner in which Washington president Bruce Allen does business put it, Allen will try to conjure up something in an effort to salvage value for Cousins and, in turn, make it harder for him to hit the open market and finally get the long-term contract he deserves. As another source put it regarding Washington, ‘They are in the pettiness game.'”

The move may seem a bit petty considering Washington would unnecessarily be holding Cousins hostage for their own gain. However, it would certainly be opportunistic for the Redskins to take advantage of the current quarterback landscape in the NFL.

It seems their only option in order to do so would be to franchise tag Cousins for a third consecutive season. Washington would need to find a suitor soon thereafter in order to avoid paying him over $30 million for just a single season. That said, it would not take long to find a serious trade partner, especially those that were already looking to offer him a lucrative long-term contract this offseason.

Among the notable teams that have emerged as the early favorites for Cousins' services are the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals.
