After a much-talked about build up, rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts finally made his first NFL start for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. After helping his side to a 24-21 win over the New Orleans Saints, the 22-year-old opened up about his unforgettable experience.
Hurts, who was given the nod over Carson Wentz as the Eagles' starting QB against the Saints, shared how Wentz provided him with some much-needed advice prior to the contest:
“Yeah, he had a few tips for me,” Hurts said, via NFL.com. “A few little things, kinda point out here and there. Certain looks. Seeing space of the defense and stuff. So he was very helpful this week.”
Wentz has been struggling for pretty much the entire season, which prompted talk about Hurts taking over the reins of the offense for Philly. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson finally heeded the call, and decided that it was time to give Hurts the opportunity.
On Sunday against New Orleans, the former Oklahoma standout finished with 17-of-30 completed passes for 167 yards and one touchdown. Hurts also logged 18 carries for an additional 106 yards. It wasn't a stellar performance from the young quarterback, but it was enough to earn the Eagles a much-needed victory over the NFC-leading Saints.
Hurts also spoke about the important role his teammate played in encouraging him before and throughout the game:
“As far as the team, the guys they just told me to be you,” Hurts added. “Go out there and be J. Hurts. Everything goes to take care of itself. We all had each other's back. That's the beauty about all of this.”
Barring an unforeseen change of heart, Pederson should still start Hurts for the Eagles' Week 15 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Right now, all signs are pointing to the fact that the starting gig is currently Hurts' to lose.
