Eagles’ Nick Foles talks about the uncertainty at the QB position in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Eagles have an interesting situation at quarterback with a legitimate superstar-caliber player in Carson Wentz and veteran Nick Foles who led the team to a Super Bowl title. Now Foles must deal with playing backup after his incredible season.

It is no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles have a surplus at quarterback with Carson Wentz and Nick Foles under center. Wentz was enjoying an MVP-caliber season before injury while Foles has proven to be the most over-qualified backup in the league.

Of course, this has raised questions about the latter's playing status this season. According to ESPN's Tim McManus, Foles acknowledged the challenges that come with backing up a franchise player.

“That's the challenge. That's the challenge for anyone in my situation … you just don't know,” he said, “and I think that's where, and I told you all during the playoffs, just staying in the moment, really focusing on today and this moment because that's all I can control. And it's hard at times. There are times when your mind wanders and then you start dealing with it, but that doesn't help you — it just takes you off the moment and what you need to do right now. And that's what I'm really focusing on … and that sort of alleviates all of the different anxieties that you may face.”

Many reasonably felt that Foles' postseason performance would lead to an opportunity to start with another team this offseason. However, his desire to stay in Philadelphia never wavered despite the Wentz's looming return.

His selflessnesses may be difficult to gauge for some, but it could be indicative of how far he has come over the last couple of years. Foles has shared the struggles he endured prior to joining the Eagles and admitted that there was even a time where he had contemplated retirement. That said, it appears he is content with the situation for now.

There is still no clear timetable for Wentz's return from injury although all signs indicate that he will be ready to go by the 2018 NFL season opener. Regardless, the Eagles can take solace in the fact that they have a strong contingency plan in Foles.
