The 2022 NFL Draft concluded Saturday, meaning the official end of Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert's tenure. He fought back tears in a press conference Saturday as he discussed his 22-year tenure as Steelers GM.
Colbert specifically highlighted his experiences with the Rooney family and how thankful he was to be Steelers GM. He also mentioned what it meant to get two more Super Bowl rings for the Steelers and their fans. When he came in, the Steel City had four Super Bowl rings. 22 years later, Colbert leaves the Steelers with six trophies.
It was announced back in January that Colbert would be stepping down from the GM position after the NFL Draft. At 65 years old, he wanted to take a step back from his role. It has been reported that Colbert will continue with the Steelers in an advisory role.
Now, attention turns toward just who the next general manager of the Steelers will be. Throughout the offseason, they have interviewed a slew of candidates. Those interviewees have featured both in-house and outside options. Just a few weeks ago, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic highlighted Steelers pro personnel coordinator Brandon Hunt as the frontrunner.
Pittsburgh heads into strange territory in 2022, as it'll be the first time Ben Roethlisberger isn't their quarterback in nearly 20 years. First-rounder Kenny Pickett will come in and compete for that open QB1 spot alongside free-agent signing Mitch Trubisky.
