The news comes a bit late into the offseason, as both sides explored alternative options. The Steelers were specifically tied heavily to veteran Tyrann Mathieu, although that interest never seemed to materialize. Mathieu remains a free agent, and it seems Pittsburgh prioritized familiarity and youth. While the financial details have yet to be announced, Edmunds shouldn't demand too much money, particularly on a one-year deal.
Article Continues BelowEdmunds has spent all four of his NFL seasons with the Steelers. He enjoyed the best season of his career in 2021, ending with two INTs and eight tackles for loss. Edmunds had just four tackles for loss in his first three seasons combined. He has started 60 of 64 games in his four-year career so far.
In essence, Edmunds showed immense growth in the run game, as he played in the box at a more effective clip. Safety was a main team need and while it remains so, this move allows the Steelers to look elsewhere with their No. 20 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Edmunds' return allows the duo of him and star Minkah Fitzpatrick to continue to improve together. With a healthier defense in 2022, the Steelers defense expects different results.
Quarterback has been the rumored position at that draft slot, including the likes of Malik Willis and Desmond Ridder. Re-signing Edmunds allows them to focus further on the quarterback position or perhaps even in the trenches. Another successful season and Edmunds will likely demand a larger contract next offseason.
