Roger Goodell is whatever you want him to be. He is the NFL's public lackey, taking the brunt of what owners really want. On the flip side, he could also just be some wacko who has done a poor job in his role since acquiring it. That he, and only he, is responsible for the PR nightmares that continue to beget themselves under his watch.

In reality, it is probably both or somewhere in the middle.

Anyway, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the entire national anthem debacle is delaying any potential extension for the NFL commissioner:

“The debate over NFL player protests during the national anthem has become so big within the league that it has delayed the completion of commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract extension, league sources told ESPN,” writes Schefter.

“Goodell’s deal is still expected to be completed and has been papered, sources told ESPN, but the process has been slowed while the overwhelming majority of the NFL’s attention has been diverted to handling the anthem issue, which has affected TV ratings, merchandise sales and the country’s feelings about football.”

And here comes the kicker:

“Had the issue not existed, Goodell’s contract might have been completed at last week’s owners meeting in New York, sources said,” Schefter continues. “However, because the issue has become so critical to the league, the NFL’s compensation committee spent about only 20 minutes Wednesday discussing Goodell’s extension, with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank leading those talks, sources told ESPN.”

For what it is worth, I can probably do the same job as Roger Goodell. Not as good or not as bad, but I can do it. After all, the game was already at its peak when he came to take over the head-honcho controls. All he has to do is not mess it up beyond the point of absurdity.
