The Seattle Seahawks recently parted ways with long-time edge rusher Cliff Avril after he failed to pass a physical following the serious neck injury he suffered last season. It’s an unfortunate situation for Avril, who had been a big part of the Seahawks’ dominant defense for the past few years.
On the bright side, though, Avril has quickly landed on his feet and found himself a new job. It’s not as an edge rusher, though. Instead, he’ll be a daily radio personality for a Seattle station.
Per Gregg Bell of The News Tribune:
Article Continues BelowCan confirm former Seahawks Pro Bowl DE Cliff Avril is joining @SportsRadioKJR as @JasonPuckett20's daily co-host.
Avril’s decision to take the radio job doesn’t necessarily mean he plans to retire just yet. In an article on The Players Tribune, he says he remains undecided as to whether he plans to continue his NFL career.
After playing his first five seasons with the Detroit Lions, Avril spent the last five seasons in Seattle. He racked up 33.5 sacks in his first four seasons with the team. That includes a career-high 11.5 sacks and five forced fumbles in 2016, which earned him his first career Pro Bowl selection.
Avril’s departure is just another in a growing list of long-time Seahawks to leave Seattle this offseason. That list includes Richard Sherman, Michael Bennett, and Jeremy Lane. Kam Chancellor’s future also remains uncertain due to his own neck/spine injury.
With Avril and Bennett gone, the Seahawks will be relying heavily on Frank Clark and Dion Jordan to prop up the team’s pass rush for the upcoming season.
