Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is one of the more polarizing free agents this offseason, due to his NFL record-setting performance in passing yards—leading the league in the metric along with throwing the most interceptions. Sometimes picks aren't always directly on the blame of the gunslinger, but Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians is still tagging Winston for a majority of his interceptions.
Arians, 67, after his first season coaching Tampa Bay explained his love-hate relationship with the possibly soon-to-be former Bucs QB on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via JoeBucsFan.com.
“I loved him and I hated him,” Arians said of Jameis on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “More love, I mean, you throw for 30-something touchdowns and 5,100 yards, there’s a lot to love. The mistakes sometimes, you scratch your head.”
“I think there are about 10 that weren’t his fault,” Arians said of Jameis’ interceptions. “But I would have liked to have seen a better December. You know, that’s usually, that end of November and December, it starts clicking for us. It did for Carson in Arizona. It did for Ben [Roethlisberger]. It did for everybody. But [Jameis] made some mistakes in December that I didn’t like.”
“He’s one of those guys that wants to go out and win the game by himself sometimes. Let the other guys help you.”
Arians joined the Buccaneers' organization following a year off from football after five years coaching the Arizona Cardinals. A two-time AP Coach of the Year with the organization, Tampa Bay is hoping the Super Bowl champion (twice as an assistant) can impart wisdom on the fledgling franchise. However, Arians might have to work on that without Winston under center in the near future.
