The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the time of their lives when they celebrated their Super Bowl LV victory after beating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. However, the experience turned out to be quite different for wide receiver Chris Godwin who dropped his phone in the water while celebrating.
Nonetheless, Godwin admitted that the incident made the whole celebration a more momentous occasion for him and his Buccaneersteammates.
“Honestly, it made the whole memory a lot better,” Godwin said to Good Morning Football. “We were on top of the boat, on the front of the boat, and it's a little wobbly, right? So I thought Scotty was gonna fall into the water. I brought my phone out because I was about to go live, and I feel him about to fall, so I go to stop him and his back hit the phone out of my hand and I watched it fall in.
“I'm looking at the police officers that are right next to us, and everyone is like ‘Oh!' And I'm like, ‘not oh, get somebody (to) get my phone!' It dove way too fast, man. It was over as soon as it hit the water.”
As per TMZ Sports, Godwin eventually reached out to Verizon regarding the issue. A day later, the telecommunications company immediately came through as he was able to replace his lost phone with a new one.
“Phone takes a dive into the river and 24 hours later, @verizon blesses me with a new one!” Godwin said. “I appreciate ya'll! S/O to the plug!”
“The Fedex guy needed a signature & then said ‘try not to drop this one into the water too.'”
In his fourth campaign in the league, Godwin saw a drop in his individual numbers as he failed to exceed the 1,000 receiving yard mark as compared to the previous season. He only settled for a total of 840 receiving yards on 65 receptions along with seven touchdowns in 12 games played.
Despite the dip, Godwin still emerged as an integral piece for the Buccaneers' successful title run in the 2020 season. However, he already played out his rookie contract signed back in 2017 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming offseason.
The Buccaneers will certainly make Chris Godwin a priority signing in the next few months as the entire team will seek to run it back to defend their Super Bowl title come 2021.
