Jameis Winston had one of the most unique seasons of all-time in 2019. Playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the quarterback completed 60.7% of his passes for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdown passes. However, he also threw 30 interceptions.
That's right, it was the first 30-30 season in NFL history.
Were all those interceptions Winston's fault though? While a lot of people are quick to blame him, wide receiver Chris Godwin doesn't believe so.
According to ESPN, Godwin reveals why he believes Winston got more of the blame than he deserved for his interception total with the Buccaneers:
“I definitely think he got more of the blame than he deserved,” Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin said in a recent interview with The Boardroom. “I think he's a really, really talented quarterback. Obviously there are things that he does that you can't teach, and there are plays that he made that just weren't smart plays.
“But a lot of the mistakes and interceptions that he made, I would say half of them were because of a bad read on someone else's part.”
To be fair, this is true of any quarterback. Maybe not “half” but any quarterback will have interceptions that were due to a drop, wrong route or bad read by a receiver.
However, there's another side to that. Every quarterback will also have would-be interceptions that the defense dropped or that a receiver made a miraculous play on to save.
It's one of those things that make the position so odd. Everything falls on them, even though a lot of the blame and praise isn't always deserving.
Godwin enjoyed a breakout season with the Buccaneers in 2019. The receiver racked up 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns. So he clearly had a good connection with Winston. Therefore, it's easy to understand how he could find the constant shots thrown at the quarterback to be unfair.
Meanwhile, Winston is still a free agent, but there are a few teams that should consider picking him up, the arm talent is evident.
