Tom Brady shocked the NFL world in March when he put an end to his 40-day retirement call and returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, this move did not come as much of a surprise to running back Leonard Fournette.

Speaking during the Buccaneers’ mandatory minicamp this week, Fournette touched on his reaction to Brady’s decision to return to Tampa Bay for the 2022 campaign. The veteran running back further noted that the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback simply could not call it a career after the team’s dramatic playoff exit last season.

“I kind of knew,” Fournette said. “I told him probably two days after the game – I'm like, ‘[Tom], we can't go out like that.' He agreed with me. We left too many mistakes on the field that kind of messed us up. We were playing catch-up the whole game.

“I think as a champion, I knew he wouldn't want to go out like that for his legacy.”

The Buccaneers crashed out of the playoffs after their NFC divisional round defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. While Brady mustered up quite a comeback in the second half of the contest, the eventual Super Bowl champions ended up advancing on through to the NFC title game via a 30-27 victory.

Even though Brady does not have much left to prove with his run in the league, he did note that one of the reasons for his call to unretire from the NFL was due to having “unfinished business.”

Brady holds essentially every major passing record in NFL regular season and playoff history, although an eighth Super Bowl win would be quite an accomplishment at this stage in his career.
