The Philadelphia Eagles have set the precedent for what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope to emulate in the 2018 NFL season. Not only did the Bucs make sure to re-sign their solid backup quarterback but it appears they will also be running elements of the run-pass option as well.

The Eagles enjoyed great success with this approach during their Super Bowl run last season. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, head coach Dirk Koetter feels every team will be some form of the run-pass option in the 2018 NFL season:

“I think everybody in the league is probably going to do more of it this year,” Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said in response to the question of whether his team will be doing more of it in 2018. “The success that Philly had, it’s a copycat league.”

Philadelphia had been clicking on all cylinders with quarterback Carson Wentz under center. However, there was a bit of a transitioning period for backup quarterback Nick Foles before he was able to put it together just in time for the playoffs.

The key to the run-pass option is having a quarterback that is not only capable of reading the defense but is athletic enough to make them pay for it. Although quarterback Jameis Winston is not the most agile player at his position, he certainly has enough mobility to catch a defense off guard.

Given the scoring woes the Bucs endured last year, it is clear they need to shake things up. That said, do not be surprised to see the Bucs and the rest of the NFL run this system until defensive coordinators figure out a way to stop it.
