New Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has revealed his expectations with the team for the 2019 NFL season.

At a press conference on May 30, Tannehill told the media (via Tennessee Titans reporter Paul Kuharsky) his aim is “to be ready if my number is called.”

Yeah, my end game right now is to be ready if my number is called. I'm gonna come out and compete each and every day against the defense, try to get better and better, taking to this offense, learn it as much as I can and if my name is called, then be ready to go and help this team win.

Tannehill also made it clear he's competing against the Titans' defense – and not starting quarterback Marcus Mariota – during Titans OTAs, per Kuharsky's official website.

Tannehill also confessed to Kuharsky playing as Mariota's backup is “a transition for me, definitely tough at times.” He said the toughest part is “having to take a step back in the leadership role.” Tannehill was the Miami Dolphins' starter for six of the past seven seasons.

While Tannehill isn't “as smooth as he rolls out or runs” as Mariota, the former's gap between himself and the latter isn't big, Kuharsky notes. It's not as big in years past among Mariota and his former backups Zach Mettenberger, Matt Cassel, and Blaine Gabbert.

It may take a while for fans to grow accustomed to seeing Ryan Tannehill in a backup quarterback role. However, the Titans, behind Mariota and running back Derrick Henry, should compete for the AFC South title again.

With that in mind, Ryan Tannehill should play a vital role in Tennessee's title aspirations in the NFL's 100th season.
