The Washington Commanders have openly been on the market, looking for their future quarterback. It was so public, they essentially had to bring one in as last year's signal caller, Taylor Hienicke, must have had his confidence thrashed. On Wednesday, the Commanders landed their guy. They traded with the Indianapolis Colts for quarterback Carson Wentz. This should be an upgrade, but the question that remains is how much of an upgrade is it. Las Vegas wasn't moved by the deal.

When Wentz is playing at his best, he can very good and turn some heads. He was the front-runner for league MVP before tearing his ACL late in the season a few years ago. But he has also shown the other side of that, especially down the stretch last season. So, let's get into it.

Here are my three bold predictions for Carson Wentz with the Washington Commanders next season.

3 Bold Predictions for Carson Wentz next season

3. WENTZ PROVES LAS VEGAS WRONG, IMPROVES THE POSITION

Despite the fact that Las Vegas did not change the Super Bowl odds whatsoever after the Wentz trade, they should have. Wentz is absolutely an upgrade over Heinicke and will prove that this year.

One of the biggest knocks on Wentz, according to most pundits, had been his propensity to turn the ball over. But that assertion is not backed up by the stats. Last season, Wentz only threw seven interceptions. Some might say, so what, he had a season of good ball management. Well, that was actually the fourth time in his six-year pro career that he threw exactly seven interceptions.

The outliers were actually the two seasons he did turned it over more frequently. In his rookie year of 2016, he threw 14 interceptions. In 2020, he threw 15.

Whereas, in his first full year as a starter, Heinicke already has thrown 15. Too often skill position players like wideout Terry McLaurin went unused.

A lot of fans on social media are of the opinion that Wentz and Heinicke are the same player. They are not and Wentz will show that early on. ESPN's Mike Clay agrees.

2. CARSON WENTZ HELPS TURN TERRY MCLAURIN INTO A STAR

Last season was supposed to be speedster Terry McLaurin's breakout year. That did not come to fruition. McLaurin still had a decent year, surpassing 1,000 yards (1,053) and reeled in five touchdown catches. But it was a slight step back from his sophomore year in 2020 and a far cry from the breakout season many expected.

Wentz is not a massive upgrade, but he is an upgrade. Prior to losing Parris Campbell to injury last season, Wentz frequently hit Campbell deep. The perception that Wentz can't throw deep is also misplaced. He has a very strong arm and just needs time and a receiver to stretch the defense.

Wentz is going to be the best quarterback McLaurin has every played with. On the flip side, McLaurin is going to be the best receiver that Wentz has ever played with.

Again, I am not saying that Wentz is an All-Pro or anything close. But I firmly believe he is better than he gets credit for. He should have a lot of fun with McLaurin running the route tree.

1. WASHINGTON COMMANDERS WIN THE NFC EAST

People might laugh or call me crazy, but I think there is a decent shot the Commanders win the NFC East this year.

The NFC East is typically wide open. The last time a team won this division two years in a row was 2003 and 2004 by the Philadelphia Eagles. That's insane, but accurate. The Dallas Cowboys won the division last year. So, if that trend continues, you can take them out of the mix.

Everyone knows that the New York Giants are a complete disaster. If they win more than five games, most people would be very surprised.

That leaves the Eagles and Commanders. Last season, the Eagles' strength was their defense, and in particular their secondary. Well, both of their starting safeties, Rodney McLeod and Anthony Harris, are set to become unrestricted free agents next week. Starting cornerback Steven Nelson is also going to be a free agent. It's highly unlikely this defense is nearly as good as it was last season.

That will put that much more emphasis on the improvement of Jalen Hurts as a passer. Personally, I'm not a believer.

Meanwhile, the only key name for Washington likely to hit the market is offensive guard Brandon Scherff. His loss will be felt, no doubt. But there are a lot of lineman in this free agent class. If I was a betting man, I think it's worth it to take a shot on the Commanders to win the NFC East.
