The Washington Football Team is still discussing what the best option is as their team name and it just may be the one they have right now. While the franchise converses on the team name, Jason Wright — Washington's team president — said that the team's placeholder name is ‘definitely in the running'.
“It's definitely in the running,” Wright said, via ESPN's John Keim. “I don't think anything is off the table. … With this one, people are excited about the idea of a club has an identity rooted solely in the area it represents. Maybe it's Football Team or it's Football Club. We need to get underneath the why, so no matter what direction we go, we can pull on the heartstrings of folks.”
Of course, for those that weren't aware, Washington changed their previous team moniker after years of unrest from the Native American community. While the organization needed time to manufacture a new name, the front office chose to use Football Team as the placeholder.
Article Continues BelowHowever, even though the name wasn't created to be the long-term answer, Wright believes it could be. The new team president in the nation's capital also uttered that Washington Football Club could be a possibility as well.
With a new regime in place, Washington is interested in instilling a new culture and image for the franchise moving forward.
Changing the team name was the first step toward altering their shaky history with fans. And despite the name being bland in a sense, Wright believes simplicity could be the best choice of the bunch.
